Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said she would leave office if corruption involving even a single rupee were proved against her. Addressing an event in Lahore, she also said government employees found taking bribes were being dismissed as part of Punjab’s anti-corruption campaign.
Anti-corruption drive in Punjab
Maryam described eliminating corruption as a leading priority for her government. She said a vigorous campaign was under way across the province, with action being taken against public employees who accepted bribes.
Peace and security before investment
The chief minister questioned how workers could do their jobs in an environment marked by daily protests and vandalism. She said providing peaceful and secure conditions had to come first in efforts to bring in investment.
Land recovery and wider markets
Turning to Punjab’s economy and administrative measures, Maryam highlighted the province’s substantial contribution to national gross domestic product. She also pointed to changes she said were taking place across industry and other sectors.
- She said land occupations dating back 25 years had been ended.
- Encroachments had been cleared to create more space in markets.
- Pakistan’s young population, she said, had the potential to become the country’s greatest asset.
