Millions from Around the World Gather at Imam Hussain’s (AS) Shrine in Karbala on Ashura

Millions of mourners from around the world gathered at the holy shrine of Imam Hussain (AS) in Karbala, Iraq, to observe Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram. This year, on June 25-26, 2026, the streets of Karbala were filled with devotees performing prayers, mourning processions, and religious gatherings to remember the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), his family, and companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.

The annual event is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. Pilgrims came from Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, India, and many other countries. Authorities prepared extensive security and service arrangements to manage the huge crowds. The area between the shrines of Imam Hussain (AS) and Hazrat Abbas (AS) became the centre of mourning, with traditional processions, matam, and recitations echoing through the city.

Ashura is a day of deep remembrance, reflection, and devotion. Participants honour the values of sacrifice, justice, courage, and steadfastness shown by Imam Hussain (AS) against tyranny. Many also took part in the historic Tuwairij Run, a symbolic procession expressing love and loyalty.
