Motorway Users May Get Refunds as 50% M-Tag Penalty Lands in Islamabad High Court

Motorway users across Pakistan may receive refunds after a petition challenging the 50% surcharge imposed on motorists without an M-Tag was filed in the Islamabad High Court.

The petitioner argued that the additional charge is unlawful, discriminatory, and places an unfair financial burden on commuters. The case seeks to have the penalty declared invalid and requests that authorities reimburse motorists who have already paid the surcharge.

The Islamabad High Court is expected to examine whether the penalty complies with existing laws and whether the policy was introduced within the legal powers of the relevant authorities.

If the court rules in favour of the petition, thousands of motorway users who previously paid the additional fee could become eligible for refunds.

The case has attracted significant public attention, as its outcome could affect future toll collection policies and the implementation of the M-Tag system across the country’s motorway network.
