A stunning view of the Southern Lights has been recorded from space by NASA astronaut Jessica Meir while aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, offering a rare and mesmerizing perspective of one of Earth’s most beautiful natural phenomena.
The time-lapse footage captures vibrant, shifting waves of green, purple, and blue light flowing across the sky near Antarctica. These glowing patterns appear to dance above the planet’s surface, creating a dramatic visual display that highlights the dynamic interaction between Earth and space.
Much like the Northern Lights, the Southern Lights—also known as the Aurora Australis—are formed when charged particles released by the Sun collide with gases in Earth’s upper atmosphere. These particles are guided toward the polar regions by the planet’s magnetic field, where they release energy in the form of colorful light.
Although the phenomenon is equally common in the southern hemisphere, it is observed far less frequently simply because very few people live in or travel to regions close to the South Pole. As a result, most sightings occur from remote research stations or, in rare cases, from space-based observations like this one.
