History

The newly developed government of Pakistan established the National anthem Committee (NAC) in December 1948. Its purpose was to find the official national anthem of Pakistan. For this, I was assigned the task of composing music and lyrics.

Sheikh Muhammad Ikram was the chairperson of the committee. The other team consisted of several poets, singers, musicians, and politicians, including Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar and Ahmed Ghulam Ail Chaga.

Initially, all committee members worked hard to collect something that should represent the nation’s pride and do justice for the struggle to achieve Pakistan.

In 1950, when the head of state of Indonesia came to visit Pakistan, unfortunately, NAC still did not even provide the tune to pay homage to their homeland. Soon after the visit to Iran, Shah was expected.

Therefore, the government of Pakistan urged the NAC to provide the National anthem of Pakistan lyrics. A competition was held in which hundreds of songs were submitted. Finally, Ahmed Ali Chagla Composition was selected and officially adopted on August 21, 1950.

In March 1950, the Shah of Iran visited Pakistan as the lyrics were not finalized. Thus, the only tone was played. In 1952, Hafeez Jalandhari wrote the lyrics of the National anthem. It was broadcasted on August 13, 1954, on Radio Pakistan.

After many years, in 1996, a Pakistani Sufi band named Junoon put a new life into the National Anthem composition using the electronic guitar. After that, another Pakistani Musician Jehangir Aziz Hayat composed a soulful instrumental rendition that took the anthem to another level.

Its music is getting better and even better with time. A new record was set in 2011 when most people, around 5,857, sang national anthems simultaneously at the national stadium in Karachi.

The 1st stanza roughly means that the sacred of Pakistan may remain blessed and grow freely under the citadel faith.

In the 2nd stanza, it is said that the unity of people might remain in this sacred land. Also, Allah may bless our ambition, nation, and state to shine like everlasting glory.

  • A competition was organized to select the best song for the Pakistani anthem. The offered winner prize was PKR. 10,000. It was selected from out of 723 songs.
  • The national anthem of Pakistan music composition was done by the musician Ahmed Ghulam Ali Chagla in 1949.
  • Hafeez Jalandhari wrote the national anthem of Pakistan.
  • It takes about 80 seconds to complete.
