Pakistan has announced a nationwide public holiday on Friday, May 1, 2026, to celebrate Labour Day. This day honours the hard work and rights of labourers across the country.
The federal government made the announcement recently. All government offices, private companies, schools, colleges, and other institutions will stay closed. The State Bank of Pakistan has also declared it a bank holiday, so banks will not open.
Labour Day, also known as May Day or Youm-e-Mazdoor, is observed every year on May 1. Pakistan officially made it a public holiday in 1972 under Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto as part of the first labour policy.
The day remembers the struggles of workers for better wages, safe conditions, and fair rights. Trade unions usually hold rallies, marches, and seminars on this day to raise labour issues.
This year, since May 1 falls on a Friday, people will enjoy a three-day long weekend with Saturday and Sunday. Many families are happy about the extra rest and time to relax or travel.
Labour Day highlights the important role workers play in building the nation’s economy. It reminds everyone to respect and support the rights of labourers in factories, fields, and offices.
