Pakistan Army Deployed as Heavy Rain Triggers Emergency in Rawalpindi

The Pakistan Army has been deployed in Rawalpindi to assist civil authorities with rescue and relief work after intense rainfall created an emergency situation and increased concerns about urban flooding.

The heavy downpour has affected several parts of the city, prompting authorities to strengthen preparations in areas considered vulnerable to flooding. WASA teams have also been mobilised, with heavy machinery positioned at key locations to respond to emergencies and clear affected areas.

Particular attention is being given to Nullah Lai as water levels continue to rise. Officials are monitoring the water flow closely to assess the threat to nearby communities and take timely action if conditions worsen.

Water levels at Kattarian reached 27 feet, while Gawalmandi recorded a flow of 21 feet. Warning sirens and alerts were activated in response, allowing residents in surrounding areas to remain aware of the developing situation.

The rainfall has been particularly intense in several locations. Shamsabad recorded the highest rainfall at 195 millimetres, followed by New Kattarian with 180 millimetres.

The combination of heavy rain and rising water levels has created hazardous conditions on roads and in low-lying areas. Emergency services and local authorities remain on alert as they monitor the weather and water situation.

Residents have been advised to remain indoors where possible and avoid unnecessary travel. Motorists have also been urged to stay away from flooded routes and areas near waterways.

The deployment of the Pakistan Army alongside WASA and other emergency teams is intended to strengthen the city’s response capacity during the current weather emergency.

Authorities are continuing to monitor rainfall, drainage systems and Nullah Lai while keeping response teams ready for possible flooding or rescue requirements. Citizens have been encouraged to follow official alerts and instructions as the situation develops.
