Pakistan could unlock a $1.5 billion export opportunity by increasing its hybrid rice sales to China, as demand for Pakistani non Basmati rice continues to grow. Industry estimates suggest China could eventually buy up to $1.5 billion worth of Pakistani hybrid rice.
Pakistan’s rice exports to China have already shown strong growth. In the first quarter of 2026, shipments reached more than $45.19 million, compared with $7.39 million during the same period in 2025. This represents a 511% increase, according to Chinese customs data.
The opportunity comes as Pakistan’s overall rice exports have fallen from their record level. In FY2024-25, the country exported 5.82 million tonnes of rice worth $3.35 billion. Non Basmati rice made up more than 86% of total shipments. Rice exports later declined to around $2.29 billion in FY2025-26.
Pakistan is also improving its hybrid rice production. Punjab University and Wuhan University developed PU-786, a new variety that can produce up to 140 maunds per acre and has resistance to diseases, heat and pests.
If Pakistan can meet Chinese quality, food safety and supply requirements, the market could help increase export earnings and strengthen the country’s rice industry.
