Pakistan Railways Posts Highest Ever Revenue of Rs. 115.16 Billion But Still in Loss

Pakistan Railways has recorded its highest-ever annual revenue of Rs. 115.16 billion in the financial year 2025-26. This marks a strong 24.19% increase from Rs. 92.72 billion in the previous year.

Passenger services brought in Rs. 50.59 billion, while freight operations earned Rs. 40.78 billion. Earnings from commercial activities, property, and scrap sales also rose significantly. Cash inflows grew by 24.6% to Rs. 120.07 billion. These figures show clear operational improvement in trains, goods transport, and other areas.

Despite this record performance, the department is still running at a loss. Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi pointed out major structural problems and tough competition from road transport as key reasons. High operating costs and old infrastructure continue to create financial pressure.

The government is working on long-term solutions. Plans include modernizing tracks and stations, expanding freight services, digitizing ticketing and operations, and improving passenger comfort. These steps aim to reduce losses and bring financial stability in the coming years.
