Pakistan ranks top in South Asia in terms of infrastructure development

Despite the unanticipated shock of the COVID-19 epidemic, Pakistan has risen one spot to fifth place in infrastructural development, bucking the regional trend of decline.

As per the annual report on the Belt and Road Infrastructure Development Index (2021), the report encompassed 71 countries, including 63 Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries and eight Portuguese-speaking countries. Southeast Asia placed first among the Seven Regions, with Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam claiming the top four spots.

Like the previous year, the Central and Eastern European region was at the bottom of the list. According to China Economic Net, South Asia was the only region to experience a significant drop, falling from third to the sixth position in the index due to a serious blow to infrastructure development hampered by the wide spread of the Coronavirus in India (CEN).

The Belt and Road Infrastructure Construction Statistic is a composite index that accounts for the environment, demand, heat, and cost of BRI infrastructure construction.
