Pakistan Cricket Board has announced that Pakistan will host a tri-nation ODI cricket tournament featuring New Zealand and South Africa in February 2025.The announcement was made after the tri-series was approved on the sidelines of an International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting in Dubai.
After the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore, security concerns continued to impact the country’s ability to host international cricket matches. In fact, that incident stripped Pakistan of its right to co-host the 2011 World Cup. International cricket was fully restored to Pakistan only in 2020. Therefore, the decision to host a tri-series is a significant step for the country.
The tri-series, which will involve Pakistan, South Africa, and New Zealand, will be the first of its kind in the country since 2004 when Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe were involved in a similar tournament.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed his excitement about the tournament. In an interview, he said that;
‘The tri-series will serve as a build-up to the eight-nation Champions Trophy, the first ICC event in the country since the 1996 World Cup.’
He also added;
‘The tri-series between Pakistan, South Africa and New Zealand will be an exciting event and it is after a long time that Pakistan will host such a tournament.’
