Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia have signed a major defence agreement called the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement. The deal was formalised on 7 August 2026 in Makkah during a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
According to official statements from Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry and the joint declaration, the agreement includes a key mutual defence clause. An armed attack on any one of the three countries will be treated as an attack on all three. The pact aims to strengthen collective deterrence against aggression and improve overall defence cooperation among the nations.
The leaders said the agreement builds on long-standing historical ties, Islamic solidarity and shared strategic interests. It also provides for closer work in areas such as training, intelligence sharing and military coordination. Officials described the pact as purely defensive in nature and open to other regional countries if they wish to join.
The signing comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East. Pakistan’s Prime Minister was accompanied by Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir during the visit. The agreement expands earlier bilateral defence understanding between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia by bringing Türkiye into the framework.
