Pakistani Woman from School Dropout to Teacher Who Won $1 Million Award, Here’s Her Story

Sister Zeph is a remarkable teacher who not only won the $1 million Global Teacher Prize 2023 but also began her teaching journey at the age of 13. She faced challenges from anti-social forces in Pakistan while establishing and managing a school.

When asked about expecting the award during UNESCO’s General Conference in Paris, she mentioned having a feeling but was genuinely surprised and emotional when it was announced. Standing next to the trophy before the announcement, she felt something significant would happen but didn’t anticipate it being this grand.

Having been an educator for 26 years, providing free education to hundreds of underprivileged children in Pakistan, Sister Zeph is excited about her first trip to the UAE. This trip is significant as the Varkey Foundation, based in Dubai, sponsors the award and will be welcoming her.
