Pakistan’s Home-Based Workers Earn Just Rs. 50/Hour

Home-based workers in Pakistan continue to face financial hardship, with some earning as little as Rs50 per hour despite rising living costs, electricity bills, and household expenses.

The issue was highlighted at an event in Lahore marking International Home-Based Workers Day, where participants said workers’ wages had remained unchanged for the past three years, making it increasingly difficult for families to afford basic necessities.

The event also highlighted concerns over unpaid labour, workplace harassment, and gender-based wage discrimination. Jamila, vice president of the Home-Based Workers Union, said prolonged working hours and repetitive tasks were causing physical health problems among workers.

She urged home-based workers to establish local union units to collectively demand fair wages, better working conditions, and greater protection of their rights.
