Pakistan has received special clearance for its oil tanker MT Khairpur to transport around 80 million litres of diesel from Kuwait to Karachi through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) vessel successfully crossed the narrow waterway amid ongoing regional tensions in the Gulf. The diesel was loaded in Kuwait, and the ship is now heading to Karachi port, where it is expected to arrive soon.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil routes. Nearly one-fifth of global oil trade passes through this narrow channel between Iran and Oman. Recent tensions in the area had created worries about delays in fuel supplies for Pakistan. The safe passage of MT Khairpur shows successful diplomatic efforts to keep energy routes open for Pakistani ships.
This large shipment will help meet domestic diesel demand in Pakistan. Diesel is widely used for transportation, agriculture, power generation, and industry. Karachi, being the country’s largest city and industrial hub, will benefit directly from improved fuel availability. The fresh supply is expected to reduce any pressure on local stocks and support smooth operations in key economic areas.
Authorities are closely watching the ship’s movement and maritime conditions to ensure its safe arrival. Pakistan relies heavily on imported fuel, including diesel from Kuwait and crude oil from the UAE. Keeping these supply lines active is important for the country’s energy security.
This development comes after Iran granted permission to several Pakistani vessels to pass through the Strait. Earlier, other PNSC ships like MT Shalimar and MT Karachi also delivered important fuel cargoes despite challenges.
The arrival of 80 million litres of diesel will provide timely relief to consumers, transporters, and industries across Pakistan.
