‘Past is Past’: Shaheen Says Goal is to Now Win World Test Championship

Shaheen Shah Afridi has stated that he is no longer dwelling on past results and is instead focusing on helping Pakistan move forward with a clear direction and stronger purpose, especially with an eye on the ICC World Test Championship cycle.

Speaking in Dhaka, he acknowledged that Pakistan’s recent performances in Test cricket have not met expectations. He admitted that the team has struggled with consistency but emphasized that these shortcomings are being used as learning points to improve future outcomes rather than being viewed negatively. According to him, the priority now is to build a more stable and disciplined approach in the longest format of the game.

Shaheen further explained that strengthening Pakistan’s Test performance will naturally have a positive impact on the team’s overall cricket across all formats. He stressed that a solid red-ball foundation is essential for long-term success and helps improve confidence and execution in limited-overs cricket as well.

He also expressed confidence in Pakistan’s bowling unit, highlighting its potential as one of the team’s key strengths. At the same time, he noted that the squad has been undergoing intensive preparation during the Pakistan Super League, using the tournament as an opportunity to refine skills, fitness, and match awareness.

Looking ahead, Pakistan is set to face Bangladesh in a two-match Test series, which will form part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 cycle. Shaheen indicated that the series will be important for setting the tone for Pakistan’s campaign and testing the team’s progress under competitive conditions.
