Petition Filed to Make Airbags Mandatory for All Car Manufacturers in Pakistan

Lahore High Court- LHC has recently accepted a written petition for the amendments in Automotive Development Policy- ADP (2016-2021), asking for the installation of the airbags to be made mandatory for the entire commercial and passenger vehicles in Pakistan for the safety of all.

As per the reports, the federal government’s concerned departments and the leading automakers from the automotive industry of Pakistan have been addressed as the respondents of this petition.

The petitioner of this petition has urged the LHC to establish a mandatory law for the installation of airbags in all vehicles to prevent automobile accident-related deaths or serious injuries. He also added that updating all the safety standards of vehicles must be necessary to ensure every motorist’s safety.

The petition states: The government has given all the guidelines on the subject matter by way of ADP; however, airbags are not mandatory in the whole overall policy of ADP 2016-2021. Therefore, this policy must be revised and amended or reframed by inserting a mandatory clause to make the airbags compulsory in Pakistan’s vehicles.

Previously a few months ago, it was reported officially that the Government of Pakistan had reached a consensus on a United Nations agreement regarding the adoption of the mandatory international safety standards. And this agreement was signed on 24th April 2020 in Pakistan.

The news of this announced development reached the Ministry of Industries and Production by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the day of 18th June, just after the said development informed the latter of Pakistan Mission, New York. This has only been announced; however, the tangible developments are not implemented and are yet to be seen soon.
