Nurse Razia Noreen is set to receive the Sitara-e-Khidmat after being recognised for her bravery during the recent fire at the neonatal ward of PIMS in Islamabad.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the national civil award along with a cash reward of Rs10 million for Razia in recognition of her actions during the emergency.
According to reports, the nurse put her own safety at risk to reach a newborn and rescue the baby as flames spread through the ward. Her quick response helped save the child during a situation that posed serious danger to both patients and hospital staff.
The prime minister praised Razia Noreen for her courage and dedication, describing her actions as an example of selfless service during a critical emergency.
As part of the recognition, the prime minister has also directed that Razia and a female security guard who was present during the incident be appointed as Officers on Special Duty (OSDs).
The decision comes amid continued public attention on the PIMS fire and questions surrounding safety arrangements at the hospital. The incident has led to investigations into the circumstances of the fire and the emergency response.
Razia’s actions have received particular attention because of the vulnerability of newborn patients, who depend entirely on medical staff and caregivers during emergencies.
