PTA Issues Notices to Google & Wikipedia for Disseminating Sacrilegious Content

Notice has been issued by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to Google Inc. and Wikipedia on account of spreading irreverent content through the platforms.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority said that it had been receiving objections regarding misleading search results linked with “Present Khalifa of Islam” and unauthentic version of Holy Quran amd has been uploaded on Google Play Store by Ahmadiyya Community.

PTA has approached Google Inc. About this serious matter with the management to instantly remove the unlawful content.

The policy has been issued with the notice under erasing and obstructing of Unlawful Online Content (Procedure, Oversight and Safeguard) Rules 2020 (“Rules”) to remove the irreverent content to keep away any legal action by the transformer.

Objections were also received regarding hosting of caricatures of Holy Prophet (PBUH) and spreading of misleading, wrong and untruthful information through articles published on Wikipedia portraying Mirza Masroor Ahmad as a Muslim.

After extended communication on the matter, Wikipedia has been eventually provided with the notice to remove the irreverent content to keep away any legal action.

In case the policy remain non-objection, PTA shall be constrained to began further action under Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (PECA) and Rules 2020.
