Puncture-Less ‘Airless’ Tires Get First Ever Test Drive

A new type of puncture-proof tire, called “airless” or “non-pneumatic” tires, has been tested for the first time by General Motors (GM) on a Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle.

The company believes that airless tires have the potential to revolutionize the automobile industry and provide a safer and more comfortable driving experience.

GM has been working on the development of airless tires in collaboration with Michelin for several years. These tires are made up of a complex array of composite materials and can withstand punctures and other types of damage that can cause regular tires to go flat.

Instead of being filled with air, these tires contain a series of spokes that support the weight of the vehicle.

According to a press release from GM, the test drive was conducted at the Milford Proving Grounds in Michigan, where the vehicle was driven at a range of speeds, including high speeds of up to 80 miles per hour.

The test results showed that the airless tires provided a smooth and comfortable ride, similar to that of traditional tires.

GM and Michelin are now exploring ways to bring airless tires to market. The companies believe that these tires could reduce waste and help protect the environment by eliminating the need for tire disposal.

Additionally, airless tires could make driving safer by reducing the risk of blowouts and other types of accidents caused by tire damage.
