The Punjab government has approved a new policy allowing 16-year-olds to get special motorcycle driving permits. This major change in the traffic rules aims to improve road safety and stop young riders from getting into legal trouble. The decision was taken under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to modernize the licensing system and promote responsible driving.
Under the new Juvenile Driving Permit system, teenagers aged 16 to 18 can apply for a restricted license. They must complete basic training, pass a test on traffic rules, and get written permission from their parents. The permit allows them to ride motorcycles up to 125cc or electric bikes only. It is temporary and valid until they turn 18, when they can apply for a regular license.
The main goal is to reduce unlicensed riding among students. Many young riders were previously caught without licenses, leading to FIRs and criminal records that harmed their future. This new permit helps them ride legally while learning road discipline. Strict rules, including helmet use and no heavy bikes, will be enforced. Traffic police will also run awareness programs in schools.
Officials say this step will make roads safer, bring young riders into the legal system, and build good driving habits from an early age. The permits started being issued in March 2026. This reform is part of broader efforts to improve traffic safety across Punjab.
