The Punjab government has approved the construction of two underpasses on Grand Trunk Road in Gujar Khan. The project is worth Rs 3.08 billion and aims to improve traffic flow and reduce the number of road accidents in the area.
According to officials, one underpass will be built at Guliana More, while the second will be constructed near the Technical Training College. These locations were selected due to heavy traffic congestion and safety concerns faced by daily commuters.
To start the project, authorities have already removed several structures from the area. These include a police service centre, public washrooms, and small kiosks.
In addition, more than 315 encroachments are planned to be cleared to make space for the construction. This step is necessary to ensure there is enough room for the underpasses and smooth traffic movement in the future.
However, the project has created concerns among local small business owners and vendors. Many of them depend on these roadside setups for their daily income. They fear that losing their shops will affect their livelihoods and financial stability.
The affected traders have appealed to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for support. They are requesting the government to provide alternative shop locations so they can continue their businesses. They have also asked for a proper rehabilitation plan to help them adjust after displacement.
