The Punjab government plans to buy 1 million metric tons of wheat from PASSCO, but the Finance Department has raised concerns about purchasing the entire quantity at once.
According to documents reported on September 3, the proposed purchase could cost around Rs. 103.75 billion at a rate of Rs. 4,150 per 40 kilograms. However, the Finance Department has asked the Food Department to provide details about wheat demand, current stocks, quality, age, and shelf life before moving ahead with the purchase.
The department has also advised officials to buy wheat according to actual requirements instead of purchasing the full 1 million tons immediately. It has asked the Food Department to discuss the price and availability of wheat with the federal government as well.
Punjab already has around 1.97 million metric tons of wheat within its supply chain, while officials estimate that about 1.3 million tons will be needed by March 2027.
