According to a notification released on Friday by the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board, the subject of “Naazrah Quran” has been added as a separate required subject for grades one to four.
Students will attend three to four lessons each week for the topic, with a 50-point annual exam to assess their progress.
The move is in response to the Punjab Compulsory Teaching of Holy Quran Act, 2018, which mandates the teaching of the Holy Quran as a compulsory topic in all educational institutions for Muslim pupils.
Last year, the Punjab government made the course compulsory for university students. The PCTB has begun the process of introducing the subject to students in grades six through twelve.
