A sharp change in weather has brought rain, strong winds and cooler temperatures to parts of Pakistan, giving many areas an early taste of winter after weeks of intense heat. Islamabad, Rawalpindi, parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir received rain on Monday, September 28.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said isolated rain, thunderstorms and some heavy falls were expected across Islamabad, northern and eastern Punjab, KP, Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan. The weather agency also said monsoon activity has weakened as the season moves toward its end.
In the twin cities, rain caused water to collect in low lying areas and affected traffic. PMD recorded 33mm at Saidpur, 28mm at Pirwadhai and 27mm at Gawalmandi. Rawalpindi authorities deployed staff and heavy machinery to areas vulnerable to flooding. The rain also disrupted flights, with two Islamabad bound flights diverted because of bad weather.
The weather has caused damage in some areas as well. Reports said a woman was killed and three others injured after a house roof collapsed in Toba Tek Singh during the rain.
PMD expects mostly dry conditions across the country after the current spell, with isolated rain continuing in some northern areas.
