The PCB’s Najam Sethi has now disclosed that the Afridi-led panel sought to remove Babar Azam from the leadership, even though the temporary selection committee only chose the team for the home series against New Zealand.

“When we took over, we established an interim selection committee. Sethi mentioned this on the Cricket Baaz with Waheed Khan YouTube channel. “Before the selectors came on board, they warned us that there would need to be some changes, and Babar needed to be changed as captain.

Yet as soon as they were appointed, they declared that Babar didn’t need to be replaced. I informed them that it was okay to alter their opinion, and he continued. Babar will continue to lead Pakistan as long as he keeps winning games for the nation, according to Sethi.

“Babar will continue to serve as captain as long as he is a successful batsman and captain. He warned that people would begin to question your leadership and other attributes if you keep losing series.

Last week, Najam Sethi posted a tweet to end the speculations regarding Babar Azam’s captaincy. Babar Azam came to see me today. I told him he will lead the ODI and T20I national team against New Zealand. And then @TheRealPCB announced the squads. So all those who were spreading fake fears are out of jobs today,” he tweeted.

Before selecting Babar Azam as captain of the following New Zealand series, the PCB chairman said he consulted with Mickey Arthur. I questioned Mickey over his preference for one or two captains for the New Zealand series. After talking to him about it, we agreed to have one captain for the white-ball format. When you get here, you may sit with Babar and decide from there; I told him,” Sethi added.

“PCB will first sign a one-year deal, and Arthur will be a member of the Pakistan cricket team for the Asia Cup and World Cup in 2023. As it has already been decided that Mickey and his crew will be attending, I also obtained Mickey’s agreement to select several selectors.
