Supreme Court Declares New Reko Diq Mine Deal Legal

Recently, the supreme court of Pakistan confirmed the new Reko Diq mine deal legal and advised all provinces to adapt their laws in accordance with the agreement.

An agreement was signed between the government of Pakistan, the provincial government of Balochistan and Barrick Gold Corporation starting of the year for the remake and restart of the project, which is on hold since 2011.

However, it has been observed by the court that the Balochistan Assembly was taken into confidence related to the agreement.

Whereas, the agreement stated that the law didn’t allow the national resource violation of the constitution.

Furthermore, Barrick Gold Corporation makes sure that the wage’s law wouldn’t be aided and labour force would be hired from Pakistan.

The court further informed that the proposal would be utilized for investing in social initiatives and skill development scheme would also be introduced under the project.

Recently, a month prior President Arif Alvi had submitted a reference in Supreme Court of Pakistan in order to have a second opinion on the Reko Diq case on an instruction of prime minister Shehbaz Sharif. However, Supreme Court had revised the verdict on the reference last week and hared it recently.
