The Supreme Court of Pakistan has directed police to register First Information Reports (FIRs) without delay when they receive information about a cognisable offence.
The court warned police officials that unnecessary delays in FIR registration could result in legal and departmental action against those responsible.
As part of its directions, the Supreme Court also instructed trial courts to take notice of cases where FIRs are registered late. Courts have been asked to examine the reasons behind such delays and take appropriate action where permitted under the law.
The orders also require the Sindh Prosecutor General to provide district-wise data on murder cases recorded from January 2025 in which the registration of an FIR took more than 24 hours.
The information is intended to help identify instances where there may have been unnecessary delays in initiating criminal proceedings.
The Supreme Court further warned that continued failure to follow its directions could result in contempt proceedings against senior police officials.
The court’s directives emphasise the importance of timely registration of FIRs after information about a cognisable offence is received. Prompt registration allows the formal criminal investigation process to begin and provides a record of the complaint.
Police authorities and trial courts have consequently been directed to ensure compliance with the prescribed procedure and address cases involving unexplained delays.
