Thatta Cement targets affordable electric cars with China imports

Thatta Cement plans to enter Pakistan’s electric vehicle market with affordable, small cars imported from China, targeting mass-market buyers rather than the premium segment. Its board has approved an investment in a wholly owned subsidiary to undertake the business.

The cement manufacturer announced the decision in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday. It did not disclose how much it intends to invest in the new venture.

The company said it sees a growing market for electric mobility in Pakistan, supported by increasing consumer interest. It also pointed to the arrival of both international and local brands as part of the sector’s expansion.

Government incentives and tax concessions have helped that growth, according to Thatta Cement. The company’s proposed entry would focus on buyers looking for smaller, more affordable vehicles rather than premium electric cars or traditional niche offerings.

Thatta Cement said the vehicles it intends to introduce would be compact and small, with prices and mobility needs of a wider group of consumers in mind. Affordability is therefore central to the market segment it plans to serve.

The subsidiary would begin by importing completely built-up (CBU) electric vehicles from China. These would arrive as finished cars, rather than being assembled locally at the outset.

Local assembly could follow at a later stage, alongside other related activities, although the company described these as future possibilities. Its initial plan remains the import of fully built vehicles.

Thatta Cement said the investment would allow it to gain an early foothold in Pakistan’s developing EV market. It aims to turn that presence into a sustainable business in the sector.

This publication’s report of 5 November 2026 identified the announcement date as Thursday, 5 November 2026, and named the listed company as Thatta Cement Company Limited, trading under the symbol THCCL. The move would take the company beyond its established cement operations, while the wholly owned structure would keep the vehicle business under its ownership.

That report also noted that the board approved the company’s financial statements for the year ended 30 June 2026. It described Pakistan’s mass market for affordable, smaller electric vehicles as largely underserved.
