Truck operators are avoiding routes toward Punjab and northern Pakistan after authorities seized more than 2,000 freight vehicles during security preparations for a planned protest in Islamabad. The situation has also caused cargo to pile up at Karachi’s port as transporters fear their trucks and containers could be taken.
Transport associations said police began stopping commercial vehicles in September as authorities prepared to block routes leading to the capital. Some operators have stopped journeys beyond Gujranwala, while others are using alternative routes. The disruption is affecting deliveries to Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Jhelum and other northern areas.
The transporters say the seizures are creating financial losses because trucks remain idle and deliveries are delayed. Daily charges for a seized shipping container can reach Rs30,000 to Rs40,000, according to the Karachi Goods Carrier Association.
Authorities have said compensation arrangements are being considered, while transporters are holding talks with officials. However, concerns remain over delayed supplies and rising transport costs if the disruption continues.
