Turkey Becomes Another Muslim Nation to Join Club of Nuclear Power Countries

With the transfer of nuclear fuel into the first power unit of the Akkuyu power plant, Turkey, according to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has entered the group of nations with nuclear power.

“Akkuyu now has the status of a nuclear power plant due to the transport of nuclear fuel by sea and air to our plant. Therefore, despite a 60-year delay, our country has joined the nuclear power club, Erdogan said during a ceremony in which Vladimir Putin of Russia was also present via video link.

According to the Xinhua news agency, Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom is building the Akkuyu nuclear power station in Mersin province along the southern Mediterranean coast. This will be Turkey’s first nuclear power plant.

“This is a flagship project and it brings both mutual economic benefits and, of course, helps to strengthen the multifaceted partnership between our two states,” added Putin.

According to the Russian leader, Erdogan “personally pays great attention to the expansion of Russian-Turkish relations.”
