On Monday, Fawad Chaudhary, the federal minister for information and broadcasting said in an interactive session with broadcasters that PDMA should be permitted to impose a fine on TV channels up to Rs250 million against the current 1 million maximum limit in current laws.
The Minister further said that PEMRA is a very wealthy organization but it does not invest on journalists, it does not focus on their training, research and digital media from the time it was formed. He added that there are only seven laws currently, which are “press is managed by the press council, Pemra deals with electronic media, and implementation Tribunal for newspapers employees look after labor regulations, newspaper registrations is dealt by Audit Bureau of Circulation and Social Media is handled by PTA”.
