A section of an under construction bridge collapsed near Baitul Mukarram Mosque in Karachi’s Gulshan e Iqbal area on Thursday, October 1, killing a security guard at the site.
According to Rescue 1122 officials, the guard was performing his duty when the structure suddenly collapsed and trapped him under the debris. Rescue teams reached the location after receiving the emergency report and recovered his body. It was later shifted to Jinnah Hospital for medico legal formalities. Officials said no other person was found trapped or injured in the incident.
The collapsed structure is part of Karachi’s Red Line Bus Rapid Transit project, which is being built along a major route through the city. The project has faced repeated delays since construction began in 2022. Its original completion target was June 2024, but the deadline has been extended because of contractor disputes, utility relocation and other construction issues.
Authorities have not yet announced the reason behind the structural failure. The incident has also brought renewed attention to safety arrangements at the ongoing project site.
