“US Needs Relations with Pakistan Just as India Needs Ties with Iran,” US Foreign Minister

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has defended Washington’s need to maintain relations with Pakistan, comparing the situation with India’s diplomatic engagement with Iran. His remarks came during an interview with Indian news channel Network18 on October 20, 2026, during his visit to India.

Rubio said Pakistan’s nuclear weapons and geographical position made it important for the United States to maintain communication with Islamabad, even when disagreements exist. He explained that managing relations with different countries is part of his responsibility as America’s top diplomat.

He also said that continued engagement with Pakistan could help Washington address concerns raised by India. According to Rubio, keeping diplomatic channels open could give the United States an opportunity to discourage actions that worry New Delhi.

Rubio stressed that the United States opposes terrorism and those who support it. His comments highlight Washington’s effort to balance its relationships with Pakistan and India, two neighbouring countries with a long history of tensions.

The remarks come as the United States and India continue discussions on trade, energy and security cooperation. They also underline Pakistan’s strategic importance to Washington, particularly because of its location and nuclear capabilities.
