Warranty Matters! Karachi Court Orders Company to Replace Defective Refrigerator with Imposing Rs 40,000 Fine

A consumer court in Karachi has sent a strong message to businesses about honoring their promises. In a recent ruling, the court sided with a citizen whose refrigerator broke down well before its warranty was supposed to end. This decision is a major win for consumer rights in Pakistan.

The story began on December 3, 2021, when a citizen purchased a new refrigerator from a local shop. At the time, the retailer claimed the appliance came with a 12-year warranty. However, just over two years later, on January 8, 2024, the refrigerator stopped working. When the buyer asked for a repair or replacement, the company refused, arguing that the warranty was actually only valid for one year.

Unwilling to accept this, the citizen took the matter to the Consumer Protection Court. After reviewing the case, the court found the company’s excuse unacceptable. The judge ordered the private company to provide the citizen with a brand-new refrigerator immediately.

The consequences didn’t stop there. The court imposed a total fine of Rs 40,000 on the company. In a rare move, the court also issued arrest warrants worth Rs 10,000 for the company’s CEO to ensure the ruling is followed.

This case serves as a vital reminder for all shoppers. It shows that if a product fails during its warranty period, you have the legal right to seek justice. Companies are expected to stand by their products, and the law is there to make sure they do.
