Cristiano Ronaldo arrived in Iran ahead of his team’s AFC Champions League match against Persepolis FC at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium. Upon his arrival, thousands of fans gathered in the city streets to catch a glimpse of the football superstar. Supporters followed Ronaldo’s team, Al-Nassr, from the airport to the hotel, even emulating his signature “Siiuuu” celebration.
Security was increased at the hotel where the team stayed due to the large crowd of fans surrounding it, and some even climbed a nearby mountain to get a better view of Ronaldo.
In a heartwarming gesture, Ronaldo met Iranian painter Fatimah, known for her incredible artwork, and presented her with a signed jersey. He also fulfilled a young boy’s dream by inviting him to the team room and giving him a signed jersey.
For many young Iranians, Ronaldo’s visit is a source of immense happiness and excitement, providing a welcome distraction from the economic challenges and international sanctions they face. Ronaldo, known for his massive global popularity, boasts 605 million followers on Instagram.
Ronaldo’s move to Al-Nassr in January 2023 paved the way for other top footballers like Karim Benzema, Neymar, Riyad Mahrez, Sadio Mane, and more to join Gulf countries’ football leagues.
Al-Nassr competes in Group E of the AFC Champions League alongside Persepolis FC, Al Duhail SC, and Tajikistan’s FC Istiklol. However, the upcoming match against Persepolis FC will be played behind closed doors due to a ban imposed by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) related to license regulations.
The AFC Champions League is the premier Asian club competition, featuring top teams from across the continent.
