WhatsApp to Let Users Generate Summaries of Unread Chats to Catch Upon Chats Faster

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new artificial intelligence–powered feature designed to help users quickly catch up on missed conversations by generating private summaries of unread messages. The upcoming tool aims to make it easier for users to stay updated without having to manually scroll through long chat histories.

The feature is expected to work across both individual and group chats, offering concise summaries that highlight the most important points from ongoing conversations. Instead of going through each message one by one, users will be able to view a simplified overview of what has been discussed, including key updates and relevant context from multiple chats in a single place.

This development is intended to significantly reduce the time users spend navigating between different conversations, especially for those who are part of several active group chats or receive a high volume of messages daily. By streamlining information delivery, the feature could improve overall messaging efficiency and user experience.

Reports suggest that the system will be built with a strong focus on privacy and security. It is said to use a secure private processing mechanism, ensuring that messages remain end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by Meta or any external party during the summarisation process. This approach is designed to maintain WhatsApp’s existing privacy standards while integrating advanced AI capabilities.

The feature is currently in development and is expected to be released gradually to beta testers once testing phases are complete. Wider availability will likely follow after performance and privacy evaluations are finalised.
