World’s Leading Tea Brand, ekaterra Targets Net Zero Emissions By 2030

Climate change is an issue that has been highlighted for a really long time. With the global temperatures rising, glaciers melting and carbon emissions increasing, there is now a dire need for the way companies operate. Scientists have warned of dire repercussions if strict measures are not taken to bring the trajectory of carbon emissions downwards.

Amid all this, the world’s leading tea company ekaterra, which is the parent brand of Brooke Bond and Lipton is setting a precedent for companies all over the world. The company has announced to reduce emissions to 0% by 2030.

At the 3rd Pakistan Tea Convention held at the Marriot Hotel, Karachi, President BSPAN and General Manager of ekaterra, Farheen Salman Amir reinforced the company’s vision to take tangible steps to promote sustainability and be the torchbearers of climate-friendly policies for the greater good of humanity. This move is applaudable since ekaterra being a market leader in the global tea category will probe other companies to explore sustainable and climate-friendly policies.

This is not the first time, ekaterra has pledged to take measures to promote regenerative energy & sustainable business practices. John Davison, Global Chief Executive, ekaterra shared the company’s ambitions at the United Nations Climate Summit, COP26 in Glasgow. He shared the company’s plans of going emission-free by 2030 and how the climate-friendly policies also include using recyclable, reusable, or compostable packaging by 2025 and aim to become an emissions-free company by 2030.

Unilever’s tea division ekaterra has been in the business of tea manufacturing since 1869. Often referred to as the pioneers of the tea business, the company has a significant presence in the global tea market with multiple brands and variations of teas like Lipton, Brooke Bond, PG Tips, Pukka, T2, and Tazo. As of now, the company has been able to cut down its net emissions to 66% which is a huge accomplishment for a company this size with a presence in four continents.

Let’s hope this precedent being set by ekaterra is replicated by other businesses, even beyond the tea industry to curb climate change and work towards restoring biodiversity and reducing carbon missions all over the world.
