Govt Approves 85% Increase in House Rent Allowance for Employees

The federal government has approved a significant 85% increase in the Housing Rent Allowance (HRA) for employees from Grades 1 to 22, marking a major step toward easing the financial burden on government workers.

Under the new plan, the allowance will now be calculated based on the current basic pay instead of the outdated 2008 pay scales. This adjustment is expected to provide much-needed relief to employees struggling with rising housing and living costs across the country.

Officials stated that the move aims to bring the allowance in line with the current inflation rate, ensuring that employees receive fair compensation for accommodation expenses.

The proposal will soon be presented to the federal cabinet for final approval, after which it will be implemented across all government departments. Once approved, the revision is expected to benefit thousands of federal employees nationwide.

The decision reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the economic challenges faced by public servants, particularly amid ongoing inflation and increasing rental rates in urban areas.
