Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the state funeral and burial ceremonies of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The ceremonies are scheduled to take place in Tehran and other cities from July 3 to 4, with main events continuing until July 9.
Ayatollah Khamenei, who led Iran for over three decades, was killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on Tehran on February 28, 2026. The funeral was delayed for several months due to the ongoing regional conflict. It will include public processions in Tehran and Qom, and end with burial in his hometown of Mashhad.
The formal invitation was sent by the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi to India’s Ministry of External Affairs. It reflects Iran’s desire to strengthen ties with friendly nations during this important time. India and Iran share strong historical and cultural links, especially in trade, energy, and regional connectivity through projects like Chabahar Port.
India has not yet confirmed who will represent the country at the funeral. The event is expected to draw many world leaders.
