Punjab to Spend Rs40 Billion on Electric Bus Charging Network Across the Province

Punjab has announced a major investment of Rs. 40 billion in the 2026-27 budget to build a charging network for electric buses across the province. The project is part of the government’s plan to expand eco-friendly public transport, reduce air pollution, and improve travel facilities for people in both large cities and smaller districts.

The charging infrastructure will be developed in phases to support the growing number of electric buses. At present, the available charging facilities can only serve a limited fleet, making the new investment important for future expansion. Officials say the dedicated charging network will help ensure reliable operations as more buses are added to the system.

Punjab has already introduced hundreds of electric buses on different routes, and the government aims to increase the fleet significantly over the coming months. New buses are expected to arrive by the end of August 2026 and will gradually begin operating in additional districts across the province.

Electric buses offer several benefits compared to traditional diesel-powered vehicles. They produce zero tailpipe emissions, helping improve air quality while also lowering fuel and maintenance costs over time. They are also quieter, making travel more comfortable for passengers and reducing noise pollution in busy urban areas.
