Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered the launch of a real-time monitoring system for underpasses to help prevent waterlogging during the monsoon season and improve emergency response.
The new system will use live CCTV cameras connected to the Punjab Safe City Authority. Through these cameras, officials will be able to monitor underpasses around the clock and quickly identify areas where rainwater begins to collect.
As soon as water accumulation is detected, drainage teams will be informed immediately and sent to the affected location. This quick response is expected to reduce delays in removing rainwater and prevent roads from becoming blocked.
The initiative is designed to improve traffic flow during heavy rainfall and make roads safer for drivers and pedestrians. Waterlogged underpasses often cause traffic jams, vehicle breakdowns, and safety risks, especially during intense monsoon rains. By responding faster, authorities hope to reduce these problems and keep major roads open.
The monitoring system is also expected to strengthen disaster management efforts across the province. Officials will be able to track conditions in real time, allowing them to make faster decisions and coordinate emergency services more effectively.
