Pakistan is preparing for a major development in its aviation sector as the government plans to conduct a live televised auction for the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on December 23, 2025.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said the process will be based on transparency and merit, with the bidding broadcast on national television so the public can follow the proceedings.
The privatisation plan is focused on giving PIA a fresh direction through fleet upgrades, improved services and stronger operations. Under the proposed plans, the airline is expected to expand its network to more than 40 cities by 2029.
Potential investors will be tasked with supporting the airline’s long-term recovery and creating a sustainable path for future growth. Despite the change in ownership, the PIA brand is expected to remain in place.
The development could mark an important turning point for the national airline, which has faced financial and operational challenges over the years.
