Toyota has announced its plans to create a new type of electric vehicle (EV) battery that can travel up to 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) on a single charge. This next-generation battery, called a solid-state battery, is expected to be available for commercial use by 2027 and can be charged in just 10 minutes. Toyota highlighted that the new EV will provide a customizable driving experience, focusing on acceleration, turning, and stopping capabilities.
The company stated that recent advancements in battery technology have allowed them to move from the research phase to the production of solid-state batteries. These batteries offer advantages over the currently used lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly found in electric cars. Despite their limitations in terms of range and charging speed, lithium-ion batteries have been preferred due to cost and durability factors.
Toyota claimed to have made a significant technological breakthrough in overcoming these challenges, although specific details were not disclosed. Alongside solid-state batteries, Toyota will continue to enhance the development of lithium-ion batteries to improve efficiency and achieve a range of 1,000 kilometers, almost double that of Tesla’s long-range Model Y. The company also intends to explore the use of more affordable lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries as an alternative option.
