Rawalpindi is set to get two new underpasses on Peshawar Road as construction on an Rs8 billion project will begin on September 7. The project is aimed at improving traffic flow on one of the city’s busiest roads.
The new underpasses will be built near Race Course Park and Charing Cross. The Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) has been given the contract for the construction work. Authorities have already completed the shifting of utility services, including electricity, water, telephone and cable networks.
To keep traffic moving during construction, alternate service roads have also been prepared. Traffic will be diverted to these roads while work continues. The alternate routes cover sections between Qasim Market and Radio Pakistan, as well as Maryam Hospital and Rafay Mall.
The two underpasses are expected to be completed within two to three months. They are part of a wider plan to create a 25-kilometre signal-free corridor from Islamabad Expressway to Motorway Chowk. The project aims to reduce travel time on Peshawar Road to around 15 to 20 minutes.
