First Pakistani-Origin Footballer! Zidane Iqbal Set to Play For Iraq in FIFA World Cup 2026

Zidane Iqbal is ready to create history as the first footballer of Pakistani origin to play in the FIFA World Cup 2026. The talented young midfielder, born on 27 April 2003 in Manchester, England, has been named in Iraq’s 26-man squad for the tournament.

Iqbal comes from a mixed heritage. His father is from Pakistan (Sahiwal), and his mother is from Iraq. He joined Manchester United’s academy at the age of nine and became the club’s 241st academy graduate. He made his senior debut for United in 2021 but moved to Dutch club FC Utrecht in 2023, where he continues to develop his skills.

He chose to represent Iraq internationally. In January 2022, he earned his first call-up and made his debut against Iran. On 26 March 2024, he scored his first international goal in a 5-0 win over the Philippines during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. He has since earned more caps and scored again in October 2025.

Iraq qualified for the World Cup after 40 long years by winning their inter-confederation play-off against Bolivia in April 2026. Fans in Pakistan and the Pakistani diaspora are excited to see Iqbal shine on the biggest stage. His technical ability, vision, and creativity make him a key player in Iraq’s midfield.

This milestone is a proud moment for Pakistani football lovers worldwide. It is expected to boost the sport’s popularity in Pakistan and inspire young talents. Iqbal’s journey shows how hard work and dual heritage can open new doors in global football.
