Luxembourg is the First and only Country in the World that Made Public Transport Completely Free in the Entire Country!

Luxembourg, a cozy European country home to around 614,000 people, recently made headlines by introducing the world’s first nationwide free public transport system, starting from March 1, 2020. This groundbreaking move covers buses, trams, and trains, allowing both residents and tourists to travel without purchasing tickets, except for first-class train passengers.

Even though the service is called “free transport,” it comes at a considerable cost, amounting to over €500 million. Taxpayers will foot the bill for the €41 million lost in ticket revenues, while transport staff will still be on duty, albeit with reduced time spent on ticket checks. This marks a significant change in how transportation is funded and accessed.

The decision to implement this ambitious initiative serves several purposes. Firstly, it acts as a social policy to redistribute wealth by increasing taxes on higher-income earners. Moreover, it tackles Luxembourg’s growing traffic congestion issue, as the country boasts the highest car ownership per person among EU nations. By removing financial barriers, the aim is to encourage a 20% increase in public transport usage over the next five years, promoting environmental awareness and cutting down on carbon emissions.

Despite facing challenges related to operations and infrastructure, Luxembourg’s bold move towards sustainable transportation through free public transport signifies a crucial step in reducing environmental harm and enhancing societal well-being.
