Millions in the Dark! Over 10.8 Million Pakistanis Still Without Electricity

According to the Energy Progress Report 2026, more than 10.8 million people in Pakistan were still living without access to electricity in 2024, placing the country among the 20 nations with the largest electricity access gaps.

The report noted that Pakistan has made significant progress in expanding electricity access over the past several years. However, many communities continue to face challenges related to the affordability, reliability, and quality of electricity services.

Experts say that having access to electricity is essential for improving everyday life. It supports education by allowing students to study after dark, strengthens healthcare services by powering medical facilities, improves communication, and creates better opportunities for businesses and economic growth.

Despite the progress made, millions of people, particularly in remote and underserved areas, still experience limited or unreliable electricity supply. The report suggests that improving energy access remains an important priority for sustainable national development.

The report also highlighted the growing importance of renewable energy sources, including solar and wind power, in helping provide electricity to areas that are not connected to the main power grid. Off-grid energy solutions were identified as practical and cost-effective options for expanding electricity access in rural communities.

According to energy experts, increasing investment in clean and reliable energy infrastructure can improve living standards while supporting long-term economic development and environmental sustainability.

The findings underline the need for continued efforts to expand electricity coverage and improve service quality across Pakistan.

Strengthening the country’s energy sector, improving infrastructure, and promoting renewable energy projects could help reduce the electricity gap and provide millions of people with more reliable access to power in the coming years, supporting both economic growth and sustainable development goals.
