Pakistan and Ir@n Agree to Expand Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul Freight Railway Cooperation

Pakistan and Iran have agreed to strengthen railway cooperation, with a special focus on reviving the ambitious Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul (ITI) freight train project. Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi met Iranian Ambassador Dr. Reza Amiri Moghadam in Islamabad on May 6, 2026, to discuss practical steps for better connectivity.

Both sides agreed to improve the important Taftan-Zahedan rail link, which connects Pakistan’s Balochistan province with Iran. They also reviewed plans to restart regular freight services under the ITI corridor. This route can provide a direct land connection from Pakistan to Turkey through Iran, reducing dependence on sea routes.

Officials believe stronger rail links will greatly boost regional trade, cut transportation costs, and increase economic cooperation. In the current global situation, many countries are shifting toward safer land-based trade routes. The ITI project, once fully operational, could become a key part of the larger regional connectivity network.

During the meeting, both countries discussed repairs to old infrastructure, better security arrangements, and ways to run smooth operations. Pakistan highlighted the challenges it faces in the railway sector due to financial constraints but showed strong commitment to the project.

This agreement is seen as a positive development that can open new trade opportunities for Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey.
