Pakistan to B@n Conventional Syringes Nationwide from Next Year

Pakistan will ban the manufacture, import, and sale of conventional disposable syringes starting January 1, 2027. The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has approved this step to stop the reuse of needles and reduce the spread of dangerous diseases.

Only safety-engineered auto-disable (auto-lock) syringes will be allowed for normal use after this date. These special syringes lock or break after one use, making reuse almost impossible. The ban mainly covers 1cc and 10cc syringes. Hospitals may still use conventional ones for some special procedures, but under strict digital monitoring.

This policy aims to improve patient safety and control infections across the country. Reuse of syringes is a major reason for the high number of HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C cases in Pakistan. Many patients get infected when the same needle is used on different people.

Health experts believe the change will greatly lower preventable infections. Manufacturers and importers have until the end of 2026 to switch to the new syringes. The government says this move will raise healthcare standards and protect public health.
